Lloyds Bank has launched what it describes as its first-ever pension transfer cashback offer, providing customers with payments of up to £5,000 for moving existing pension savings to the bank.
The promotion reflects growing competition among banks and investment providers for retirement assets, as firms look to attract savers with larger pension pots. Under the scheme, customers who transfer pensions worth at least £20,000 into a Lloyds Ready-Made Pension or Self-Invested Personal Pension (SIPP) can receive cashback ranging from £250 to £5,000.
Offer
The highest cashback payment of £5,000 is available only to customers transferring pension assets of £2 million or more. At the lower end, those moving between £20,000 and £49,999 are eligible for £250.
The offer runs from June 1 to November 30 and is open to both new and existing Lloyds pension customers. To qualify, participants must also hold, or open, a current account with Lloyds Bank, Halifax, or Bank of Scotland and keep it open until the cashback is paid.
Transferred pension funds must remain invested until May 31, 2027. Eligible customers are due to receive their cashback by June 30 next year.
Levels
The cashback structure increases in line with the value of the transferred pension:
| Pension Transfer Value | Cashback |
|---|---|
| £20,000 to £49,999 | £250 |
| £50,000 to £99,999 | £500 |
| £100,000 to £249,999 | £1,000 |
| £250,000 to £499,999 | £1,500 |
| £500,000 to £999,999 | £3,000 |
| £1m to £1.99m | £4,000 |
| £2m or more | £5,000 |
Purpose
Lloyds says the initiative is designed to encourage customers to consolidate multiple pension pots built up over the course of their working lives. Many people accumulate several workplace pensions as they change jobs, which can make it harder to track retirement savings and understand the fees being charged.
Manuel Pardavila-Gonzalez, managing director of investments at Lloyds, said it is common for savers to lose oversight of their pensions over time.
“Our personal pension aims to make it easier to bring those pots together in one place, giving customers a clearer view of their retirement savings,” he said. “Bringing pensions together can also help them take a more active role in managing their money and plan for retirement, with our cashback incentive making the process more rewarding.”
Caution
Pension experts often advise caution before transferring retirement savings. Some older pension schemes include valuable guarantees, safeguarded benefits, or lower charges that may be lost if funds are moved.
As with all pensions, investments can fall as well as rise in value, and savers may receive back less than they invest. Financial advice is often recommended before making transfer decisions, particularly for larger pension pots.
Context
The Lloyds promotion follows a broader trend across the financial sector, with providers using cash incentives to attract long-term savings. While such offers can be appealing, specialists stress that the underlying pension terms, charges, and investment options should remain the primary factors in any decision.
