Millions of people receiving payments from the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) may notice their money arriving earlier than usual this August because of the summer bank holiday.
The payment change affects people whose normal payment date falls on a bank holiday. In England, Wales and Northern Ireland, the summer bank holiday falls on Monday, August 31, 2026. As a result, payments due on that day are expected to be made on the previous working day, Friday, August 28.
Here’s what the change means, which benefits are affected, and what recipients should know.
The DWP routinely adjusts payment dates when a scheduled payment falls on a weekend or bank holiday. Instead of delaying payments, the department usually issues them on the last working day before the holiday.
For August 2026, anyone expecting a payment on Monday, August 31 should receive it on Friday, August 28 instead.
Recipients do not normally need to contact the DWP, as the change is applied automatically.
Benefits
The earlier payment may affect several DWP benefits and pensions, including:
- State Pension
- Pension Credit
- Universal Credit
- Personal Independence Payment (PIP)
- Disability Living Allowance (DLA)
- Other DWP benefits normally paid on a bank holiday
According to GOV.UK guidance, benefits are usually paid directly into a bank, building society or credit union account. If a payment date falls on a weekend or bank holiday, it is generally made on the previous working day. Child Benefit may follow different arrangements.
State Pension
People whose State Pension is normally paid on Monday, August 31 are expected to receive their payment on Friday, August 28.
This earlier payment does not represent an extra payment or an increase in entitlement. It is simply a change in the payment schedule because of the bank holiday.
State Pension is normally paid every four weeks.
Increase
The August payment date adjustment is separate from the State Pension increase that took effect in April for the 2026/27 tax year.
| State Pension | 2025/26 | 2026/27 |
|---|---|---|
| Full New State Pension | £230.25 | £241.30 |
| Full Basic State Pension | £176.45 | £184.90 |
The amount an individual receives depends on their National Insurance record and personal circumstances.
Schedule
Most DWP payments during August will continue to arrive on their normal dates.
The only key payment change in England, Wales and Northern Ireland is for those whose usual payment date falls on Monday, August 31.
| Date | Payment Information |
|---|---|
| Monday, August 31, 2026 | Summer Bank Holiday |
| Friday, August 28, 2026 | Earlier payment date for benefits due on August 31 |
If your payment is scheduled for another date during August, it should not be affected.
Scotland
Bank holiday arrangements differ in Scotland.
The Scottish summer bank holiday falls on Monday, August 3, while England, Wales and Northern Ireland observe the summer bank holiday on Monday, August 31.
People living in Scotland should check the payment arrangements that apply to their specific benefit rather than assuming the same payment dates apply across the UK.
What To Do
If your usual DWP payment is due on a bank holiday, you generally do not need to take any action. The earlier payment should be made automatically.
Recipients should check their bank account on the revised payment date. If the payment does not arrive as expected, they should contact the relevant DWP office or check their payment details through the official GOV.UK website.
The August payment change is a routine scheduling adjustment and does not affect the amount of money you receive. For most claimants, payments will continue as normal, with only those due on the bank holiday receiving their money earlier.
