For millions of Americans living on Social Security, a cost-of-living adjustment is not just a percentage. It is part of planning next year’s grocery, housing, and medical bills. The Social Security Administration has announced a 3.6% increase for 2027, and beneficiaries will soon be able to see what that means for their own payments.
There is a date worth noting before those letters arrive: November 18, 2026. That is the cutoff SSA identified for people who want to set up a personal online account and paperless notices in time for early electronic access to their personalized COLA notice. It is not a deadline to claim the increase.
Why November 18 matters
In its official October 14 announcement, SSA said people who create a personal my Social Security account and enroll in paperless notices by November 18 can access their 2027 COLA notice online starting in late November. Notices sent through the mail will arrive during December.
That difference can matter if you are reviewing your household budget before January. Early access lets you look at your own updated figures rather than relying on a national average. But there is no penalty to your benefit for preferring paper notices.
What your personalized notice can tell you
The 3.6% COLA applies to benefits, but it does not translate into the same dollar increase for every recipient. SSA estimates the average retirement benefit will rise by about $75 a month. A person receiving $1,500 a month would see an illustrative $54 gross increase at 3.6%; someone receiving $2,500 would see $90. Neither example is a promise of a particular deposit.
Your notice helps put the national announcement into personal terms, showing updated benefit information and applicable deductions. Medicare premiums, where deducted from Social Security, can affect the amount that reaches your bank account. For more context, our earlier reporting explains why the average $75 increase will not look identical for every retiree.
How to get the notice online
Start at the official my Social Security website. Sign in to your account or create one if you do not already have it. Then review your Message Center and notification preferences and select paperless notices if electronic delivery is your preference.
If you already have an account, it is still worth checking the delivery setting. An online login and a paperless-notice preference are not necessarily the same thing. Completing the process ahead of November 18 also leaves time to resolve account-access problems.
What if you miss the deadline?
You will not lose your 2027 COLA because you missed November 18. The annual adjustment is automatic for eligible beneficiaries. The date concerns early online delivery of your notice, not eligibility for a benefit increase, and there is no processing fee to activate the COLA.
SSA says people who have not enrolled in paperless notices will receive their letters during December. Mailed notices may not arrive on the same day for everyone. If yours is delayed, SSA advises waiting until January before contacting the agency about a missing mailed COLA notice.
When higher payments begin
The increase starts with Social Security benefits payable in January 2027. Supplemental Security Income recipients begin receiving increased payments on December 31, 2026, according to SSA. The different date reflects program payment schedules; it does not represent an extra monthly payment.
Our separate guide explains when higher Social Security payments begin. For the underlying annual adjustment and how it is calculated, SSA also maintains an official COLA information page.
Be careful with messages claiming you must activate the increase
A legitimate deadline for electronic notice preferences can be easily confused with a scammer’s invented deadline. Do not pay anyone to activate a COLA increase or give passwords or bank details to an unexpected caller or message. Access SSA.gov directly instead of following an unsolicited link.
What Social Security Recipients Should Do Next
If you want to see your personalized 2027 COLA figures online as early as possible, check your my Social Security account and paperless-notice preferences before November 18. If you prefer mail or miss that date, your eligible 3.6% increase still happens automatically. The practical next step is to review the notice when it arrives and use the personalized figures—not the average increase—to plan your 2027 budget.
