Social Security beneficiaries have several payment dates to keep track of in August 2026. The exact date depends on the type of benefit you receive and, for many Social Security recipients, your date of birth.
Supplemental Security Income (SSI) follows a separate schedule. SSI is generally paid on the first day of each month, but the Social Security Administration (SSA) moves payments earlier when the scheduled date falls on a weekend or federal holiday.
Because Aug. 1, 2026, fell on a Saturday, the SSA issued August SSI payments on Friday, July 31. Other Social Security payments are scheduled according to the agency’s regular payment calendar.
SSI
SSI provides monthly payments to people with limited income and resources who are 65 or older, blind or have a qualifying disability. Children with qualifying disabilities may also qualify.
The August SSI payment was issued early because Aug. 1 fell on a weekend. Beneficiaries should also be aware that an early payment does not represent an additional payment. It is simply the regular monthly benefit issued on the preceding business day.
For the remainder of 2026, SSI payments are scheduled as follows:
| Payment date | Benefit month |
|---|---|
| Tuesday, Sept. 1, 2026 | September 2026 |
| Thursday, Oct. 1, 2026 | October 2026 |
| Friday, Oct. 30, 2026 | November 2026 |
| Tuesday, Dec. 1, 2026 | December 2026 |
| Thursday, Dec. 31, 2026 | January 2027 |
The November 2026 and January 2027 payments are also scheduled early because the first day of those months falls on a weekend or federal holiday.
Schedule
For most Social Security retirement, survivor and disability beneficiaries, August payments are distributed according to the recipient’s birthday.
The August 2026 schedule is divided into three Wednesday payment dates:
- Wednesday, Aug. 12: beneficiaries born Aug. 1 through Aug. 10
- Wednesday, Aug. 19: beneficiaries born Aug. 11 through Aug. 20
- Wednesday, Aug. 26: beneficiaries born Aug. 21 through Aug. 31
This birthday-based schedule applies to many beneficiaries, but not everyone receives Social Security on these dates. Some recipients fall under different payment arrangements based on when they began receiving benefits or the types of benefits they receive.
Timing
The SSA generally recommends allowing additional time before reporting a missing payment. If a payment does not arrive on the expected date, the agency advises beneficiaries to allow three additional mailing days before contacting Social Security.
Electronic payments are now the standard method for receiving benefits, and the vast majority of beneficiaries receive their money electronically. The SSA says 99% of beneficiaries receive their benefits electronically.
If your payment is delayed, checking your bank account or payment information first can help determine whether the issue is with the payment itself or with the financial institution processing it.
Eligibility
Supplemental Security Income is different from Social Security retirement benefits. SSI is a needs-based program for people who meet specific income and resource requirements and are 65 or older, blind or disabled.
People who believe they may qualify can apply online through the Social Security Administration. Applications can also be made at a local Social Security office or by calling the SSA at 1-800-772-1213. TTY users can call 1-800-325-0778.
Telephone assistance is generally available Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. local time.
Offices
Beneficiaries who need assistance can use the Social Security Administration’s online office locator to find a nearby Social Security office.
The locator can provide information about available offices and help beneficiaries determine where to seek in-person assistance. It is useful for people who need help with applications, benefit questions or other Social Security matters.
For August 2026, the key dates are Aug. 12, Aug. 19 and Aug. 26 for many Social Security beneficiaries whose payments are based on their birthdays. SSI recipients received their August payment on July 31 because Aug. 1 fell on a Saturday. If a payment does not arrive as expected, beneficiaries should allow three additional mailing days before contacting the SSA.
