Nationwide Building Society has responded to customer concerns after one member reported being unable to view a newly opened account through online banking.
The issue emerged after a customer shared their experience on social media, explaining that a recently approved FlexAccount was not appearing in the Nationwide mobile app despite already being an existing customer.
Nationwide later clarified that there can sometimes be a delay before newly opened accounts become visible through digital banking services.
Concern
The customer explained online that they had successfully applied for a FlexAccount earlier in the day but could not immediately see the account listed alongside their existing Nationwide products.
In their message, they said:
“It was approved and account was opened but I can’t see it on my app. I am an existing customer and I’m really concerned. Please help.”
For many banking customers, delays involving account visibility can cause confusion, particularly when applications are approved quickly but digital systems take longer to update.
Online and mobile banking platforms often refresh account information through separate internal processes, which can occasionally create temporary delays.
Response
Nationwide responded publicly to reassure the customer and explain its standard procedure for newly opened accounts.
The building society stated:
“New accounts can take up to five working days to appear alongside your existing accounts online. If it has been longer than this, please give us a call on 03457 302011, so we can look into this further for you.”
The customer later confirmed that the account had only been opened that same morning and said they would allow additional time for the app to update.
Timing
Digital banking systems typically process account setup and verification in stages. Even after approval is confirmed, mobile and online banking access may not update immediately.
Several factors can affect how quickly a new account appears, including:
- Identity verification checks
- Internal account linking
- System refresh schedules
- Mobile app synchronization
- Security reviews
In many cases, accounts appear within a shorter timeframe, but Nationwide advises customers that the process may take up to five working days.
Customers who experience delays beyond that timeframe are encouraged to contact customer support directly.
Switching
The update comes as Nationwide continues promoting its latest current account switching incentive.
The building society is currently offering £175 to eligible customers who switch from another bank using the Current Account Switch Service (CASS).
The offer applies to:
| Eligible Accounts | Included |
|---|---|
| FlexDirect | Yes |
| FlexAccount | Yes |
| FlexPlus | Yes |
Customers can switch into either a newly opened account or an existing eligible Nationwide current account.
However, the switch must involve transferring from a non-Nationwide provider and closing the previous account as part of the process.
Conditions
To qualify for the £175 payment, customers must meet several conditions within specific deadlines.
Nationwide states that customers must:
- Complete a full account switch
- Finish the switch within 28 days
- Deposit at least £1,000
- Make one debit card payment
These steps must be completed within 31 days of either:
- Opening the new account, or
- Requesting a switch to an existing account
After all conditions are satisfied, Nationwide says the bonus payment will be made within 10 days.
The payment will appear on account statements as:
“Switching Offer”
Customers must also ensure the account remains open when the payment is processed.
Fairer
Alongside the switching incentive, Nationwide has also confirmed the return of its Fairer Share payment scheme for 2026.
Under the initiative, more than four million eligible members are expected to receive a £100 payment.
This marks the fourth consecutive year Nationwide has issued the bonus after similar payments in previous years.
To qualify, members generally need to hold:
- A Nationwide current account, and
- Either a qualifying savings account or mortgage
The building society introduced the Fairer Share payment as part of its mutual ownership model, which allows profits to be returned to eligible members rather than external shareholders.
Banking
As digital banking becomes increasingly central to everyday account management, temporary delays or missing account details can quickly cause concern for customers.
Financial institutions often encourage users to allow time for system updates before reporting issues, particularly when new accounts have been opened recently.
For customers opening additional accounts with Nationwide, the organisation’s guidance suggests that some waiting time may be normal before accounts appear fully integrated within mobile and online banking platforms.
At the same time, the current switching offer and Fairer Share payment continue to attract attention from customers comparing current account incentives across major UK banking providers.
