Millions of Americans receiving Social Security are watching the September 2026 payment schedule while also looking ahead to the next cost-of-living adjustment. For beneficiaries on the standard Wednesday schedule, September 16 is the key payment date for people whose birthdays fall between the 11th and 20th of the month.
The payment schedule is separate from the annual COLA process. While September benefits follow the Social Security Administration’s established calendar, the 2027 COLA is still only a forecast. Current public estimates have generally been around 3.5% to 3.6%, but the official figure will depend on inflation data from the third quarter.
Payments
For most people who started receiving Social Security after May 1997, the payment date is generally determined by their birth date.
The September 2026 schedule for these beneficiaries is:
| Payment date | Birth date |
|---|---|
| September 9 | 1st through 10th |
| September 16 | 11th through 20th |
| September 23 | 21st through 31st |
This means beneficiaries with birthdays from September 11 through September 20 are scheduled to receive their Social Security payment on Wednesday, September 16.
There are exceptions to the standard birthday-based schedule. People who began receiving Social Security before May 1997 generally follow a different payment calendar. People receiving both Social Security and SSI can also have payments scheduled separately.
Schedule
Social Security retirement and other benefits are generally paid on Wednesdays for beneficiaries covered by the standard schedule.
People who began receiving benefits before May 1997 generally have their Social Security payment scheduled around the third day of the month, subject to adjustments when the date falls on a weekend or federal holiday.
SSI follows its own calendar. Some SSI payments are issued early when the first day of a month falls on a weekend or holiday.
For the remainder of 2026 and the beginning of 2027, the SSA calendar lists these SSI payment dates:
| Payment date | Payment |
|---|---|
| October 1, 2026 | October 2026 SSI |
| October 30, 2026 | November 2026 SSI |
| December 1, 2026 | December 2026 SSI |
| December 31, 2026 | January 2027 SSI |
An early SSI payment does not represent an additional benefit. It is the payment for the following month being issued earlier because of the calendar.
Missing
If an expected Social Security payment does not arrive on its scheduled date, the SSA recommends checking with the bank or other financial institution first. A processing delay can sometimes affect when funds become available.
If the payment remains missing, is late or appears to have been stolen, beneficiaries can contact the Social Security Administration at 1-800-772-1213. People who are deaf or hard of hearing can use TTY at 1-800-325-0778.
Recipients can also contact their local Social Security office for assistance.
Checking the payment schedule first can help distinguish a genuine delay from a payment that is simply scheduled for a different date.
Forecast
The 2027 Social Security COLA has not yet been officially announced.
Current public forecasts have generally clustered around 3.5% to 3.6%. The Senior Citizens League has been cited as projecting a 3.5% adjustment, while CBS News has reported a 3.6% projection. Other estimates have also been in the roughly 3.4% to 3.6% range.
These figures are estimates, not the final COLA.
The 2027 adjustment will be calculated using the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers, known as CPI-W. The formula compares the average CPI-W for July, August and September with the corresponding third-quarter average from the previous year.
Because September’s inflation data is part of the calculation, projections can change before the official figure is determined.
Announcement
The official 2027 COLA is expected to be announced in October, with October 14, 2026, currently identified as the expected announcement date.
Once the final percentage is established, the increase will generally begin appearing in Social Security payments in January 2027. SSI payments can follow a different calendar because of the way the program’s payment dates are arranged.
For beneficiaries, the difference between a forecast and the official figure is important. A projected 3.5% increase should not be treated as a guaranteed change to next year’s monthly check.
Impact
The 2027 adjustment matters because COLA is designed to help Social Security benefits keep pace with changes in consumer prices.
The 2026 COLA was 2.8%, according to the SSA. If the 2027 adjustment ultimately reaches 3.5%, that would be a higher percentage increase than the one applied in 2026.
However, the percentage increase alone does not determine how a household’s finances will change. Different expenses can move at different rates. Housing, groceries, utilities and health care costs may not rise at the same pace as the CPI-W measure used for the Social Security calculation.
Medicare-related deductions can also affect the amount a beneficiary actually receives in their bank account. As a result, the gross Social Security increase and the change in a person’s final payment can be different.
For now, the immediate issue is the September payment calendar. Beneficiaries with birthdays from the 11th through the 20th are scheduled for payment on September 16, while those with birthdays later in the month are scheduled for September 23. Looking further ahead, the 2027 COLA remains a forecast until the SSA announces the official figure in October. Current estimates around 3.5% to 3.6% provide a useful indication of expectations, but the final adjustment will depend on the third-quarter CPI-W data.
