Arlington County Fair

DC Caribbean Carnival

Description: Kicking off with an exhuberant parade of folks in costume, this carnival captures the spirit of the Caribbean. The procession starts at Georgia and Missouri Avenues and travels all the way to Barry Place. Afterwards, activities are held at Banneker Park. Spectacular live music and craft, food and drink vendors enhance the celebration and a fantastic concert is held the following day.

Friendship Firehouse Festival

Description: This annual festival is hosted by the Friendship Firehouse Museum, housed in a firehouse built in 1865. Step inside the city's fire engines, take a look at the antique fire equipment on display and be sure to look around inside the museum, too. Free fire hats and a live dalmation delight the kids, and and there's also live music, craft booths and food and drinks sold on site.

Independence Day Parade

Description: What better place to celebrate Independence Day than in our nation's capital? The Fourth of July celebration on the Mall features numerous concerts in several locations, a glittering, patriotic parade, food and souvenir vendors, and street entertainers. The celebration ends with a magnificent fireworks display over the reflecting pool. A must for anyone in DC on the Fourth. METRO: The Smithsonian Metro station is closed on the Fourth; other nearby stations include Metro Center, Gallery Place-Chinatown, and Judiciary Square.

National Capital Barbecue Battle

National Freedom Walk

Description: Created by Pentagon employees, this walk remembers the people who died in the September 11 attack and honors our national troops. Participants gather by the Lincoln Memorial on the National Mall and proceed to the Pentagon, where the walk ends at the crash site in the Pentagon South Parking lot. Advance registration required.

Smithsonian Folklife Festival

Description: Since 1967, this well-attended festival has showcased contemporary cultures, hosting exhibitions of the work and play traditions of many regions and locales. Events have focused on Appalachia, the Silk Road region, Native Americans and even urban dwellers. Dance, games, storytelling, music, cooking, artwork and crafts take the forefront, and attendees are more than welcome to participate in the experience. The exchange of ideas and an appreciation of cultural differences are promoted, and the entire event is a celebration of everyday life.
